“Huff .. huff .. huff …”
At that moment, Nike was oblivious to everything around him. He began to exhaust himself with all the running he’d been doing, but due to current circumstances, he didn’t have the luxury of stopping to catch his breath. Even the sounds of honking and the clamor of nighttime traffic failed to rouse him from his trance.
After having just killed a string of police officers, Nike was on the run from the authorities. Today just wasn’t his lucky day.
*If only it weren’t for those two morons. Bamz and Rookie – they ended up causing me more trouble than I expected. And that bitch, Kuvira! She takes the cake. If it wasn’t for her, everything would have been perfect.*
“Tsk-“
Lost in his own thoughts, Nike grew irritated when he thought back to what occurred just hours prior. After coming back to his neighborhood, he was hassled by two well-known gangbangers who lived on his block. They tried approaching him as if they were friends, but those two couldn’t mask their malice if their lives depended on it. As if to reciprocate their hostility, Nike instigated a fight with their whole crew – a fight that ended with their untimely deaths. It was a joke, really; fighting them while relying on his Quirk was child’s play. If only he’d been able to get away without being seen, things would have ended on a high note. Unfortunately, the amateur hero, Kuvira, caught him in the act and fought to prevent his escape while biding time for the cops to arrive on the scene. After a long fought battle, Nike barely managed to hold her back while the overuse of his Quirk continuously drained his stamina. In the end, he managed to escape after the police arrived by taking half of them hostage as using them to distract Kuvira. After slaughtering the other half, Nike fled the scene and was currently still on the run.
*I gotta get out of Flatbush. Having the ceiling cave in on her was only enough to slow her down … it’s possible that they’ve already escaped that building and that the surviving officers called for backup. At this rate, they’re likely to set the Hero Association on me. Uwahh, what a pain. I’ve got to get away at all costs.*
Or so Nike thought to himself as he ran and ducked through several Brooklyn back-alleys. Running aimlessly wouldn’t do any good. If he didn’t do something soon, he may very well be cornered by heroes who were beyond his ability to fight. However, just as he thought that, Nike ran out from the alleys and back onto the main-street sidewalk. Unable to stop himself in time, he dashed straight out into the middle of a busy intersection. Like a deer caught in headlights, Nike was almost immediately corned on both sides by cars approaching at full speed. In that moment, his heart was jumping out of his chest; the adrenaline made it feel like things were moving in slow-motion. In that moment, a sinister smile managed to find its way across his face.
“Haha … morons…”
Without hesitation, Nike proceeded to use one of his signature techniques – the Full-Body Jigen-Tou. By phasing his body back and forth between solidity and intangibility, he was able to fracture the earth beneath his feet simply by being in contact with it. The subsequent tremors were so violent that they would bring an ordinary person to their knees when in close range of him. Immediately following his destruction of the ground, Nike knelt down and permeated both of his hands into the ground. Upon doing so, he would deactivate his Quirk and re-solidify his body while inside the earth. Due to the fact that two things cannot occupy the same space at the same time, this had the effect of “ejecting” and pushing the earth away from his body. It was a technique that he’d affectionately dubbed “Meteor” for its ability to send large, earthen objects hurdling towards his opponents as projectiles. With this, he would send two dislodged sections of earth flying into both of the cars that were approaching on either side of him. Needless to say, the impact of the boulders against a civilian automobile would ‘fold’ it like aluminum.
The impact would bring them both to a full stop, and cause them to collide with the other cars that had followed behind them. In just the span of a few seconds, Nike had single-handedly instigated a large traffic build-up. Though it would seem counter-intuitive to draw attention to himself in such a way, Nike had a plan. He could use this opportunity to his advantage – if he could get his hands on a car, escaping would be much easier. Totaling those cars was something of a scare tactic to intimidate the remaining drivers into submission. Therefore, with the threat of the approaching cars eliminated, and their passengers in critical condition, Nike turned his attention to the ones who remained stationary on the opposite sides of the street in front of and behind him. With little to no time to react, most of them remained in position as opposed to driving off.
*Maybe they’re paralyzed by fear ..*
Nike briefly pondered.
*But that works out perfectly for me!*
Without wasting another moment, Nike approached the car parked in front of him. As if looking death in the eyes, the lone driver of the vehicle displayed a terrified expression. The man shakily attempted to shift gears and drive off, but before he had a chance, Nike was already at his window. Caught off guard by his presence, the man let out an embarrassingly feminine yelp while Nike forcefully opened the door and threatened him.
“Whew, that sound was you? Haha, oh man, you’re so pathetic, I almost feel bad for robbing you. It’s a nice whip though, so I’ll be taking it for a drive.”
And with that, Nike robbed the man of his possessions - including his keys and wallet - and threw him aside. He hopped into the driver’s seat of the car, and drove off with the other cars that escaped in the chaos that he’d created. With a vehicle, Nike would briefly be able to disguise his presence from authorities while preserving his stamina. Now, he would be able to escape much faster than if he were to run on foot.
*Alright, now that I’ve got a car, where should I go? It’s pretty hot around here right now … Hm. Well, I guess I could crash at his place for a bit while things settle down a bit. Tsk, driving to the city is a pain, but I guess I have no choice.*
So he sped off, driving down towards the Manhattan Bridge, bumping Ready to Die, feeling ready to die. He had a friend who lived out in the city; though they’d only recently met, Nike had planned to shamelessly impose on that man to stay and hide out at his place while the heat on him died down. Though they hadn’t known each other long, they were on surprisingly good terms, so Nike figured there wouldn’t be any problem with his showing up unannounced. After all, they’d already performed a Heist on that one bank in Chinatown together. The struggle of avoiding the police was one that this man should know well.
“Ah, but before I get there, I should do something about this car …”
After twenty or so minutes of driving, Nike approached DUMBO and then crossed over the bridge. The visage of Manhattan at night was beautiful. It really was a city that never slept. The lights that illuminated the skyscrapers reflected gorgeously on the East River. It really was a sight to behold ..
*But forget all that romantic shit. It’s perfect – the East River is right here, and I can easily make it to Chinatown on foot.*
As he crossed over the bridge, Nike made a few turns so as to drive as close to the water as possible. When he reached the ideal spot with few people around, Nike shut the car off, put it in neutral, exited the vehicle, and proceeded to push it into the water. He figured that by dumping the car in the river, the police wouldn’t be able to use it to locate him when the man he stole it from inevitably reported it stolen. Although he’d hoped to avoid attention by dumping the car, it made an incredibly loud sound as it crashed into the water below. Afraid that the sound would attract some passerby’s and more unnecessary trouble, Nike dipped out of the area.
After finishing, Nike made his way into Chinatown as unsuspectingly as he could. When he approached areas that were heavily populated, or if he spotted a police cruiser, Nike would permeate into the ground and resurface within the back-alleys again to avoid attention. As he came closer to his friend’s house, Nike noticed that the streets were more sparsely inhabited and that he could move around a lot easier than before. It was an area of the city that was similar to his neighborhood in Flatbush – it really had that “dog-eat-dog” vibe.
After a few more minutes of walking, Nike approached his friend’s home. He knocked on the door to the man’s apartment and waited for him to open the door. Soon after, the sound of approaching footsteps could be heard from behind the door along with multiple distinct groaning sounds. Well, it wasn’t all that surprising – it was in the middle of the night, so Nike had probably woken him up. In the next second, the door flew open and Nike casually greeted the man:
“Yo ~ What’s good, Drayce. Mind if I crash here tonight?”
